The Compassion of Strangers: The Way a Person I Barely Knew Assisted Me Secure the Role That Transformed My Existence

During the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a low-cost journey to Europe with a travel partner. Because my travel mate was considering pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had planned a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We got to the graduate housing, a big 10-storey building on the Upper West Side named International House. Once we unpacked, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we picked up meals, sat down, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an gentleman from Iraq studying engineering at an Ivy League institution. He inquired what I did for a living, and I told him that I had recently completed my studies with a degree in science and had been conducting research with electron microscopy.

He noted that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – close to the engineering faculty, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I consider applying for a role with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was about to fly to Europe and, additionally, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that night. The man from Iraq walked over to me and let me know that he had arranged an interview for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Since he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off explained to my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was likely not a suitable candidate.

As is common in NYC – a place where everything seems achievable – she responded: “We can make that happen. What's your start date?” I never got on that flight to London.

I worked there for three years. One of the benefits was that I got complimentary education at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to complete a master’s of international affairs.

I lost touch with him and I can't recall his identity, but his selfless gesture altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the bravery or self-assurance to contact anyone at an elite institution and request employment. Moreover, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that educational benefit.

Critically, that job in New York resulted in a role in Europe where I encountered my wonderful partner, with whom I now have four amazing children. This was a pivotal life event. That kind stranger redirected my path in life, and I’m forever grateful.
