“It was unfortunate. That was kind of an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a large group of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, Cowboys fans. The entire stadium was brimming with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was completely accidental, occurring amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I just showed the incorrect finger,” he remarked. “The action was inadvertently performed. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. But it got corrected rapidly.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Penalties
This is not the initial instance an league proprietor has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Recent cases involve:
- Carolina Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
- Then Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams received a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.
